Help save Faithless.org

Faithless.org

Welcome to the Faithless.org website.

The main purpose of this website is to help spread information about what it means to be faithless in the world today.

We believe that the key to the success of a faithless movement would simply be education, so we strive to educate.

In an attempt to perfect this site it will continually be under construction and ever-changing.

Right about now we can imagine some of the questions you may be asking, such as:

  • "Why be faithless?"
  • "What does it mean to be faithless?"
  • "Doesn’t everyone exercise some form of faith?"
    or
  • "Isn’t being faithless the same thing as being evil?"

There is a quote that sums up one aspect of the faithless message:

"Good = actions sanctioned by man. Evil = actions vilified by man."

The simple message of this quote is that good and evil are not entities that actually exist, nor are they points on some sort of moral compass that every human is supposed to be endowed with, as most of the world’s religions would have us believe, but merely are relative and subjective viewpoints of each individual human being. Collectively; we have allowed the notions of good and evil to become like individual entities and we do not even give it a second thought of how that affects all life. These; pseudo entities, are major proliferators of conflict among humans.

We are aware that this sounds as if we are claiming ultimate knowledge about absolute truths in the universe, and that we are being hypocritical to state in one sentence that no one has ultimate knowledge and then act as if we do. That’s not our intention at all. We simply want our testimony to point out to the world that faith is the antithesis to the attempt of knowledge. We can use logic and the tools of science to attempt to "know", but substituting the search with faith is where we here at faithless.org feel we fail ourselves as intelligent beings and commit disservice to our cognitive abilities.

Please do not mistake us as simply Atheist. We are as much an anathema to the atheists as we are to many religious institutions, the reason being is that the fallacies of absolutism and judgmentalism abound as much in the atheist culture as they do in the Abrahamic Religions. We find that while most atheists will agree that there is no evidence for moral absolutes they still will commit the fallacy of asserting absolute truths where there are none. We here are not denying the absolutes that do exist, we simply deny the ones for which there is no available evidence to support. We do not support judgmentalism based on unsubstantiated truths at all.

Yes, everyone exercises faith, even we who call ourselves "faithless". We however are here to demonstrate how the exercise of faith affects humanity and what we can do about it.

Our summation is that faith is built upon unnecessary superstitions, fears, and sometimes just plain ignorance about a subject. Faith devalues what it means to be able to think. We humans have somehow came into existence and none of us knows how or why, but we all seem to share a curiosity about those two questions. It is simply a shame to rely on the words of other human beings as being absolute truths, and that is precisely what faith is.

  • "Why is it such a shame?".....you may ask.
Quite simply, it’s a shame because it appears when people are satisfied they have the answers to how and why "this" all exists, then they set in motion a process that replaces our natural curiosity with intolerance and what we like to refer to as "judgmentalism". First, they stop searching. Second, they do not mind forcing their "answer" on you. Third, and most tragically, according to us, they hold back the progress of society and humanity.

The Faithless.org movement leans towards the nihilistic stance, stopping just short of supporting the unsubstantiated conclusions of some definitions of nihilism. There are probably multitudes of definitions for nihilism, many that may seem bleak as you read them, but we here find that nihilism is very liberating, and not so bleak after all. Many people mistake nihilism to be a political movement, but the truth is, it is far from it and actually, by its very nature, can not be political in any way. The reason being is that the nihilistic stance is that there is no evidence that there exists anything greater than us to provide any sort of purpose or rules to live by. Hence, a true nihilist can not be, politically-pro or politically-con anything. This is what we find so liberating, you are no longer bound to worry if you are being righteous enough or if you are being too evil, there are no such things. Being nihilistic means you no longer have to be judgmental.

..."This is a great little site. I also have a problem with faith. It just doesn't make any sense to me to believe in something upon which there is no evidence to support".....

..."I dont believe in a true reason for anything other than the mechanics and laws of physics acting upon the matter in our universe, nothing more. I write this only because I am a robot of physics and have no basis on free will, of which I think is an illusion. I dont believe we need supernatural influences to retain our morals. I think the dogma in mainstream spirituality is hurting our one existence here on planet Earth, hindering our joy and peace with rules and mandates that deep down we all know arent true, only to calm our fears about death. When we accept faith, we throw away our reason, responsibility, and common sense. The laws of nature, over billions of years, have brought together the elements, acting upon these laws, forming more and more complex structures. The structures that couldn't hold up, disappeared. The ones that did, kept evolving, some becoming humans. This is my take on nihilism and I don't believe in any purpose other than furthering my fellow mans education on science and medicine and love, and poetry, and music. Thanks"

So, what is wrong with faith?
    by David Rutland

The human race has a problem. Well, actually, it has several, but the problem this website is addressing is faith. You may be asking, “So what is wrong with faith? Don’t we all have some degree of it? Is it not a noble and desirable quality to be a faithful husband, wife, loved one and employee?” The sort of faith discussed here is something different. It’s the “faith” that requires you to give up your own personal reason and experience and turn off your brain. It’s a leap of faith that plunges you into a bottomless chasm of ignorance.

One of the unique and wonderful things about human beings is their curiosity. Driven by this insatiable desire for knowledge, we explore the universe around us. Because of it, we have discovered and harnessed fire, expanded our table of elements from four to one hundred and eighteen (and counting!), looked into the sky and seen to almost the edge of the universe and the beginning of time and space, discovered the building blocks of all life, and split atoms into smaller and smaller quantum particles. Our innate curiosity has caused us to change our view of the world and how it works, several times over. We constantly modify our concepts based on emerging information. New movements and ideas in the fields of art and politics have challenged and advanced our notions of personal freedom and _expression. There is only one area of human _expression and endeavor that seeks an exemption from this constant searching, and that is mainstream religion. Here we are not allowed to grow in our relationship with our spiritual natures, but instead commanded to take what we are told on “faith”. What as incredible disservice to the human race!

We are beings who have advanced technologically, socially and politically. Yet we are using spiritual models that have remained unchanged for thousands of years. We are champions of individual freedom, except when it comes to the hierarchal structure of our religions. Then we are treated as subjects to the dictates of a clerical class, who stand between us and some externalized goal of “perfection” and communion with God or divinity. Using threats of eternal damnation or excommunication, and promising great rewards in the “hereafter”, unscrupulous human beings manipulate others into acts of violence, hate, war and abuse. To anyone watching from the outside, the harm this mindset causes is obvious. To those under the influence of faith, such questioning is a blasphemy, and can subject them to eternal damnation and excommunication.

It’s time to stop being blinded and bullied by religious faith. It’s time to reclaim our right to search and decide for ourselves what is best for our spiritual development. It’s time to identify religious faith for what it is; another excuse for ignorance. Spiritual searching is hard. It requires your involvement. And it means that you may have to reject the false security of a lie and face an uncertain truth. Faith robs us of our individuality and forces us into a cookie-cutter “one size fits all” mentality. It turns comfort into captivity and safety into slavery. Faith is the fuzzy little kitten that in time becomes a roaring and ravenous lion.

We won’t overcome faith by force, but by reason. The weapons in our struggle are not guns and bombs, but ideas and information. We need to open minds and hearts that are constricted with fear, and replace reliance on blind faith with open-eyed wonder and exploration of the universe. Religions in their present state are excellent tools for control, but very poor models for spiritual growth. They set up an external ideal of perfection that no one can attain, and then proceed to make us feel guilty for not attaining it. It is spiritual bondage, using our natural curiosity and yearning to derive meaning from life to entrap us in dogma and empty rites and rituals. There has to be a better way. Let’s find it together.
